we head over to the West Coast, where the duo Friday Nights is making a lot of (mixed-to-perfection) noise.
A few things you need to know about vocalist Mike Castillo and multi-instrumentalist Shon Kornfeld: Like Mrozinski, they have a lot of friends who make really great music; the Friday Nights sound is as punchy as it is poppy (a la American Hi-Fi); and, oh yeah, the duo's self-titled debut was mixed by one Ken Andrews.
Instead of just resting on his laurels as a bona fide rock god, Andrews has also helped a number of groups, kick-starting their careers by lending his golden ears to their records.
You can see why Andrews' involvement was such a boon to the Friday Nights experience.
But that's not everything the California-bred "Friday Nights" has going for it -- far from it. Aside from the obvious American Hi-Fi comparisons, Castillo and Kornfeld's songwriting carries with it a lot of the perfect-for-summer bounciness usually attributed to Jamie Woolford's myriad groups (Animal Chin, Let Go and the Stereo).
In other words, this album is a lot of fun. "Takeover" is probably the best introduction to the group, with album opener "Self Inflicted" being a close second, but the one that'll probably grow on most listeners is "Dirge Song." Eschewing the group's radio-ready sound, this unexpected builder of a slow-rolling lullaby seeps out of your speakers like a long-lost Hum single from the days of "You'd Prefer an Astronaut."
Color me impressed.
